It should have been fairly straightforward to identify step C as the constraint, because it’s the slowest machine.

Step C is also where all attention needs to be placed. Improving the capacity of any other steps is premature optimization. It will have no immediate impact on the overall throughput of the system.

Finding the constraint in this example was easy because I gave you the capacity of each step. This is often not known in advance in a real-world customer factory. So let’s rework this problem as you might typically encounter it. This time, all you are able to see are the actual measured output quantities at each step. Can you identify the bottleneck now?
